Can you boost your immunity with Manuka Honey?

Many health professionals advise taking Manuka Honey to maintain and promote general well-being. But how exactly can you boost your health with Manuka Honey?

What is Manuka Honey?

Manuka Honey is a unique type of honey, native to New Zealand, produced by bees that pollinate a shrub known as Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium).

What distinguishes Manuka Honey from other types of honey is the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO) in a high concentration - the higher its concentration, the greater the anti-bacterial effect, and its potency to enhance good health and prevent illness.

In the past, Manuka Honey was used in traditional medicine to help heal wounds, treat digestive problems and strengthen general well-being. Researchers have also studied how Manuka Honey can help heal wounds due to its anti-bacterial,  anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) grading system appraises natural markers found in Manuka Honey, and assures purity and quality.  The honey's  classification reflects the presence of 3 distinct compounds found in Manuka Honey: methylglyoxal, dihydroxyacetone, leptospermum. The higher the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), the greater the benefits of the honey.

The nutritional value of Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey contains 4 times the nutrients found in other types of honey, making it unique and distinguishable. The following nutrients are present in Manuka Honey (amongst others):

  • Carbohydrates
  • Amino acids
  • Antioxidants
  • Minerals such as calcium, potassium and phosphorous
  • Compounds such as methylgloxal (MGO) and hydrogen peroxide
  • Enzymes such as diastase, invertases, glucose oxidase

Benefits of Manuka Honey for your well-being

Many people use and consume Manuka Honey to support good health.

Winter Support

Honey has been used over the centuries as a natural antibiotic. Researchers have discovered that the reason behind its ability to protect against germs comes from the compound methylglyoxal (MGO) present in honey. The higher the concentration of this substance, the greater the honey's anti-bacterial properties are.

Anti-bacterial and Antibacterial

Researchers have shown that Manuka Honey has a powerful effect on many types of bacteria. It is used to treat antibiotic-resistant bacteria and treat wounds that do not heal with antibiotics.
